Statistics

May 2, 2008

Statisics will be activated in early June 2008.

Entry1. The Garmin 305 bike computer was going to be the magic device to provide all the statistics for the trip. Elevation gained, miles per day, average speed, etc etc. However, the unit is scrambled!! Moreover, I had to purchase another device in Idaho Falls to cover the basics. I am trying to get this resolved with Garmin.

However, here are some basics:

Ave miles/day: We try to get 80 miles/day. Depending upon terrain, weather and wind we ride between 60 and 90 miles/day.

Ave speed: We average 16-19 miles/hour over a days ride. We averaged 30mph for 20 miles from Valentine – Johnstown NE (25mph tailwind-but it was great!) In Iowa, today, we averaged 13.6 mph.. by far the worst and by far the most exhausting day (see Peter’s “Iowa” log).

Flats: Peter 4, Ian 2, Dan 0  (2 of Peter’s attributed to faulty tire)

Falls off bike: Peter 2, Dan 1, Ian 0 (to-date all falls in the first week of the trip)

Enrty 2. July 7, ’08 (entry 1-updated) The Garmin 305 is in for repairs at the factory. Very disappointing and I hope to have it back before the trip is over.
